THE PITCH

We need more quality food/entertainment venues in Downtown Goshen. To that end…if we can raise $10,000, I will start a non-profit fund to run a contest to accept restaurant ideas for Downtown Goshen.

The criteria for the restaurant (we can collectively vote on criteria as we proceed to add more):

  • must be located within Goshen Historic District as defined on the National Register
  • must offer some sort of benefit to donors to this fund
  • must have at least a 3 year business plan to qualify
  • should bring something new and unique to Goshen

The donors will get to vote on the winner of the contest (and the $$$) using a preferential voting method

You don’t pay a thing unless we reach $10,000. Spread the word!

Ok everyone, let’s all recruit 2 more people. Try to get them to give $50 or more, but even $10 or $20 would be helpful. And if you didn’t see it, here’s the article from The Truth (registration required…they need to stop forcing that):

I think the Bluegill proved that a fine dining restaurant CAN survive in downtown Goshen. Other factors contributed to its downfall. Same with the Brick House.

Goshen doesn’t seem to be able (yet) to support a “fine dining” restaurant, if the demise of the Brick House and Blue Gill are any indication. I think a crepes restaurant might be at an attractive price point and interest both the college/young adult crowd and the baby boom generation.

Goshen has a hard time keeping fine restraunts around, and i’m not sure i would want to contribute to a hole in the wall restraunt, like Il Forno. But the the thought of a new restraunt tickles my fancy.

One of the first steps to a sustainably-vibrant downtown:

I think David had it right with his questionnaire answer: diverse, nationally-recognized cuisine. I would err on thai, tapas, or high-quality vegan.

if we raise the funds, yes. but if the money’s not there, i don’t see the point. and i don’t want to run a restaurant, i just want to help make it happen :-)

Is it too early to pull together a management / investment guidance team, so that folks can know something of who might be running such a venture?

Consider a cooperative organizational structure where these dollars would be investments. As a cooperative, we as investors share both the success and the risk of a new restaurant. I have some experience in cooperatives if you want further conversation.
